Easy Bonus – United MileagePlus Miles or 15% Cashback at Sears

Here is a classic example of stacking promotions and taking a little risk regarding the fine print. You probably know I have recently become a major Sears shopper in the last few months (a personal shopper, if I may…maybe you would like to be my client?) and I have been profiting every time I sit down in front of my computer. I made over $125 in about an hour just recently.

United MileagePlus is offering a 1,000 point bonus on a $250 purchase. Sears happens to be a participating retailer…and the fine print indicates that gift cards are eligible for point earning until July 9 at a current increased rate of 4 points per dollar. However, you can not earn points when you redeem gift cards. Incidentally, the wording via Splender is the same but opposite at Ebates. Confused? Step by step, here’s how to maximize this offer…despite the fine print regarding the 1,000 point bonus saying that gift cards are not eligible, I am betting it will come through.

Step 1: Start at MileagePlus Shopping

Step 2: Purchase a $250 Gift Card at Sears (or Reload One for Faster Service)

In completing Step 1 and Step 2, you will earn the 1,000 point bonus (assuming my risk pays off) PLUS 4 points per dollar – or another 1,000 points on your $250 purchase. This is a total of 2,000 points or 8 points per dollar. While this type of offer comes around a few times a year, I’m happy to take advantage of it. Why? Because then…

Step 3: Navigate to Sears by Way of Ebates and Pay With Your Gift Cards

Since the Ebates terms do not restrict the earning of points on purchases paid for with gift cards, we should be safe here and take the 6% return they currently offer. Not an Ebates member? Please use my link – there is still time to earn a $50 bonus, which you can read about here.

Don’t forget to check your Shop Your Way page for loadable coupons – either for percentage or dollars off, cash back offers, or surprise points.

Step 4: Consider Loading Up via Splender

Splender (I’m a new user) is offering 9% back at Sears and also pays on gift card purchases until July 9th. So, beyond the $250 needed to trigger the United bonus, I am purchasing my gift cards through Splender and redeeming them through Ebates. This triggers a 15% total discount (or cash back) on top of any other sales or promotions you may find.

If you don’t care to get the 2,000 United MileagePlus points, you can skip right to Step 4 for purchasing gift cards and back to Step 3 for redeeming them.

A Quick Summary and Example

Via MileagePlus Shopping and Ebates

  • If you purchase a $250 gift card by way of MileagePlus Shopping, you will earn 2,000 points.
  • If you spend the $250 gift card by way of Ebates, you will earn $15.
    • This means that your regular old $250 purchase is worth a bonus 2,000 MileagePlus miles and $15 in cashback. I value those miles at a minimum of $20!

Via Splender and Ebates

  • If you purchase a $250 gift card by way of Splender, you will earn $22.50.
  • If you spend the $250 gift card by way of Ebates, you will earn $15.
    • This means that your regular old $250 purchase is worth $37.50 in cashback.

Will you take advantage of this offer?

I am constantly finding ways to manufacture spend at Sears – I might even make it to Platinum status in July! I have no hesitation in purchasing Sears gift cards during this offer.
